A partnership between the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) and OpenEconomics provides a robust evaluation of the economic, social, and environmental value created by the Italian Open in Rome and Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, using internationally recognized indicators like SROI and ESG ratings.
OBJECTIVES
Sport economy: impacts extending beyond the court
The FITP commissioned an assessment of the two tournaments’ socio-economic impacts, emphasizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. The objective is to measure all positive externalities - economic, social, and those arising from embedded sustainability practices - brought to society by FITP’s tournament organization.
This analysis captures benefits reaching beyond sport itself, such as enhanced public health, stronger social ties, and the creation of shared value, using internationally validated metrics.
SOLUTION
SROI models and ESG Framework: measuring social return and sustainability
Impact evaluation for the Italian Open and ATP Finals uses a dual-method approach. The first—Social Return on Investment (SROI)—calculates the ratio of direct and indirect social benefits to costs, with particular focus on the value spectators’ leisure time adds to the event. The second—the ESG rating—summarizes each event’s compliance with global standards on sustainability, environmental impact, and good governance. Combined, these metrics deliver a clear, comparable view of the value generated, as well as responsible and ethical event management.

RESULTS
Outstanding results
Sport plays a pivotal role in enhancing health and wellbeing in communities, serving as a vehicle for positive change and a driver of social cohesion and sustainability.
The study quantifies the tangible impact on both local and national communities, supporting the generation of added value and a lasting legacy for regions and stakeholders.
Outcomes are highly favorable compared with benchmarks for major sporting events: SROI of 5.2 for the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals (highest AAA governance rating) and 7.2 for the 2025 Italian Open.

ADDED VALUE
Transparent methods, scalable models, and readable indicators
Methodological rigor: ESG framework conforms to international best practices, with data validated by FITP and institutional sources (ISTAT, Bank of Italy)
Comparable KPIs: SROI and ESG ratings are disaggregated by dimension (audience, sport-health, tourism, international investment) and facilitate comparison across event editions and formats
Scalability and reusability: standardized, replicable methodology supports consistent historical series, simplifies planning, enhances stakeholder engagement, and drives data-informed communication
